There was a major boost for Mayo this morning (Wednesday, November 27) with the announcement of the creation of 150 new jobs by Northgate Information Solutions in Castlebar over a three year period. The jobs will focus on Northgate’s core services including IT and transactional services, as well as document management services and an extension to the health services already in place. The announcement was made during the conference on Partnership and Innovation hosted by the West/North West Hospitals Group and NUI Galway today.

Value Centre Castlebar was officially reopened by the Taoiseach earlier this week, just over a year after a fire at the cash and carry temporarily closed its doors. Owners and operators BWG Foods spent €2 million on a massive refurbishment of the site and kept all staff jobs open, moving workers to other Value Centres in the area until Value Centre Castlebar was ready to welcome them back. All 14 employees are now back in work and the cash and carry has resumed full service to businesses across the west of Ireland.

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny visited pupils in Craggagh National School, Balla, this week for the launch of the 2013-2014 Blue Star Programme; a national primary school initiative which aims to foster better understanding and knowledge of the European Union among Irish primary school pupils through classroom projects and activities. The Taoiseach was welcomed to Craggagh NS by a colourful guard of honour put on by the school’s younger pupils. During his visit, the Taoiseach met with members of the school community and was treated to an exhibition of the pupils’ Blue Star projects and artwork from the entire school.

The recent announcement of the Honourable Mr Justice Hardiman to serve as chair of the upcoming Brehon Law Society’s 2013 US Ireland Symposium in Westport, in late September has created enormous interest in the upcoming event. The symposium hosted by the Brehon Law Society of Philadelphia with the support of Mayo County Council and the Western Development Commission will run from September 25 through 27 including a Gala dinner evening with An Taoiseach Enda Kenny as special guest of honour . Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring has today been informed by Minister of State for the Gaeltacht Dinny McGinley that he has approved funding for roads on Clare Island and on Inishbiggle. In relation to Inishbiggle, funding is being provided for 75 per cent of the overall cost of the roads with €45,000 being allocated. In relation to Clare Island, again 75 per cent is being approved for the overall cost of the work and they will be receiving €60,750.

Jim Higgins MEP for Ireland North West and Ireland's Member of the European Parliament Transport Committee has welcomed new figures released by the RSA which show that the number of road deaths in the county has fallen by 20 per cent so far this year.
